Pastor Barry Scott
Greetings from the pastor...
Thank you for visiting the website of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and for letting us show you a small part of the exciting ministry of this congregation. It was at a place called Aldersgate that John Wesley felt his heart strangely warmed by the presence of the Holy Spirit. The name of our church reflects its rich spiritual heritage and worship centered on the reality of the Risen Christ in our midst. Our hope is that your heart will be warmed and stirred by what happens when you join the Aldersgate family of God for worship. If you love great music in a variety of forms, then you will be uplifted any Sunday you come to join with us. We have been blessed with a sanctuary of great beauty and a building complex that allows us to offer a great variety of programs and activities. You will find our congregation has a heart for missions, a commitment to Biblical truth, a loving acceptance for people of all ages and a commitment to grow as disciples of Christ. At this church, we are seeking to live out our motto: Aldersgate-- where "ALL means ALL". I want to extend a personal invitation for you to join us in worshiping our Savior and Lord this Sunday at 10:50 a.m. You will find that our congregation is eager to welcome your family in the celebration of God's grace through Christ.
In Christ
Dr. Barry Scott, Pastor
Bro. Barry Begins new Sermon Series in January
Dr. Scott begins a new sermon series on Sunday, January 22, focused on the Ten Commandments. They are the ultimate top ten list. The Ten Commandments are a bedrock of morality and ethics. Since the Ten Commandments expressed God's moral requirements, they are reinforced or reinterpreted by New Testament teaching. The Ten Commandments are still a reliable worship guide and moral compass for the present and are still applicable to our lives as Christians today. However, this sermon series will keep in mind, that as Christians, we are under the new covenant of grace and Jesus Christ is our ultimate lawgiver. Over the next few months, he will be helping us take a deeper look into the meaning of each commandment in detail.
Aldersgate has formed three new groups --Come join one!
Young Adult Fellowship -- Our Young Adult Fellowship Group has been meeting once a week and the group is having a great time. Mrs. Beth May fixes a wonderful meal for the group to enjoy. Two gatherings are planned in December. The group will meet and go Christmas caroling at 4:00 p.m. on December 18th and then come back to the church for the annual Christmas dinner. Then on Wednesday, December 21, the group will be going to Nashville for an all day shopping and sightseeing event. We are planning on leaving at 9:00 a.m. and making a day or even an evening of it. Any young adult from late teens through twenties is encouraged to be part of the group.
Angels and Stars -- Our tween / junior high youth group is going and growing great on Sundays at 5:30 p.m. We have had a total of eight youth participate and the attendance average is about six per meeting. The group has been named the "Angels" (the girls) and the "Stars" (the boys). At a recent Sunday night meeting, everyone made an Advent wreath and accompanying devotions to be used at home. The group has creative Bible studies, games, activities, stick ministry practice, prayer circle and a meal. The enthusiasm level of the group is "off the charts". Adult leaders each week are Amy Harris, Al Cox and Bro. Barry. If you would like to volunteer to provide a light snack meal for the "Angels and Stars", please let Amy know or call the church office.
As a mission project during the Christmas season, the group will meet on Saturday, December 17th, at 1:00 p.m. to bake some yummy Christmas cookies. The group will then deliver the fresh, homemade cookies to residents of Jackson Meadow Retirement facility.
Bible Study for Men -- Ten men have been participating in the study entitled "Every Man, God's Man" on Monday nights at 7:00 p.m. Their have been some great discussions and a growing closeness developing within the group as we share our lives. Once this study finishes, a new study and sharing group geared to men will be offered early in 2012. So, if you are not already attending, make plans to join us in the new year.
